Got questions? I might have an answer right here.
Q: How much will it cost to fix my guitar?
A: Without your instrument on my bench, I can't answer that question. I'll need to see your instrument firsthand to get an idea of what its needs are, and at that point I can provide an estimate. It's important to note here that my competitive edge has nothing to do with pricing. Please be aware that "big" jobs like restorations, and unpredictable jobs like partscaster assemblies, won't ever be quoted. I'll provide an estimate, and that's an estimate. There are too many variables in those sorts of jobs to commit to a number. You and I are the same. Neither of us want to work for free.
Q: How long will it take to get my guitar back?
A: Picture me doing that shrug move with my palms facing up. I don't commit to timelines. Wild stuff pops up in my workflow all the time. You'd be surprised how often it's not "just a setup." Yours might be, sure. That doesn't mean the other twenty in the shop are.
Q: What are your hours?
A: I operate by appointment only. You'll se available time slots when you click the "Book Now" button.
Q: Do you work on amps/pedals/microphones/interfaces/mixers/stereos?
A: Nope. If you need amp repair though, Mike at Twisted Wires is your guy!
Q: Why do you swear/curse? Isn't that unprofessional?
A: That's just how I speak. Some people are turned off by it, some people aren't. My work speaks more effectively than my words, though, and that's professional enough for me!
Q: Will this affect my tone, and how? What are the intricacies of tone?
A: Here's one of the conversations I don't like to engage in. Sure, it might affect your tone! I can't hear the difference between a .047 Emerson and a .047 orange drop. That doesn't mean there's no difference. I'll put in whichever one you prefer.
Q: Can I come check out your shop?
A: Nope. People are counting on me to get their stuff fixed. If you need a a repair, you can schedule an appointment.
Q: What's your favorite guitar?
A: I have no idea. I have crushes on lots of guitars. Guitars are awesome. As someone who focuses on repair, the guitar I respect the most is the Telecaster. Always will be. They're indestructible!
To see some of my favorite modern guitar builders, check out Schorr Guitars, Millimetric Instruments, Novo Guitars, Tao Guitars, Dion Guitars, Thorell Guitars, and M-Tone Guitars.
Q: I've spent a lot of time on internet forums, and...
A: I will not go on this journey! It is too dangerous, and it is too time-consuming.
Please keep in mind that most people on the internet forums are not repair people. Some of them have tinkered on their own guitars, or their neighbors' guitars. These aren't people you should take advice from, in my opinion. But that's just my opinion!
Q: Tube amp or solid state?
A: Hell yeah! Both!
Q: Can I schedule an appointment outside of the available time slots?
A: Nope.
Q: Can I schedule an appointment without submitting my card info?
A: The short answer is no. Here's why: Unfortunately, at the same time my work volume increased, my no-call/no-shows and same-day cancellations increased. I now require everyone to submit a card when scheduling a repair appointment. *I charge for no-shows.* I don't bend on this, even for friends, because that's not fair to others. I generally clean my bench off 10 minutes before an appointment. If I wait 20 minutes past the scheduled time, I've just lost 30 minutes of time I could have spent finishing up someone's favorite guitar. Let's be respectful of each other.
Q: You charge THAT MUCH to do THAT?
A: Hell fucking yes I do. I don't argue about my rates. That's never changed a single person's mind.
I've got the credentials. My work history rules.
I'm intent on sticking around for the long haul.
I went to a rad lutherie school, completed a 2.5 year apprenticeship with a world-renowned guitar maker, and have repaired thousands of instruments during the past 10+ years.
I treat my occupation as a skilled trade, not a hobby.
I've dedicated my life to this.
Thank you.
